ABOUT THE ANNUAL CLASS PROJECT

Each year, the Leadership Sacramento class is required to undertake and complete a community improvement project. Upon determining a need and selecting an organization to support, the class develops a work project to assist their chosen nonprofit, charity, program or cause.  The purpose of the class project is to encourage and facilitate a cooperative environment where a group of leaders come together to benefit a common cause.

While the class is free to choose any organization or cause as the recipient of their efforts, they are encouraged to consider projects which support the Sacramento Metro Chamber’s mission of fostering regional economic prosperity. To that end, the class is encouraged to consider projects that offer region-wide impact, are sustainable beyond a one-year period and which emphasize the Metro Chamber’s objectives.

RECENT CLASS PROJECTS

The 35 Leadership Sacramento participants are each prepared to spend two or more hours per month throughout the year toward the completion of the class project. Below are descriptions of the most recent Leadership Sacramento class projects.

The Class of 2009 is establishing a new program for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Sacramento (BBBS) called “Sports Bigs” to engage more men to become Big Brothers.  BBBS is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States

With more than 100 little boys waiting for Big Brothers, this program will ensure that these boys are matched with the perfect Big Brother and pave the way for a positive relationship that will help the boys reach their potential – all while enjoying sports activities together.

The Class of 2009 is creating a program structure and making strategic connections with sports-related businesses in the community. The class also coordinated a fundraising event called Sports Bigs Pro-Bowl which advanced the class goal of raising $50,000 and recruiting 50 Big Brothers for BBBS. Accomplishment of this goal will bring the new program to a sustainable level and continue to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with measurable impact.

The Class of 2008 established new and sustainable services for Lilliput Children's Services' Kinship Support Services Program (KSSP) and the families it serves. To date, the class has raised more than $200,000 in cash, grants and in-kind support for the nonprofit organization and program. It successfully developed and executed KSSP’s first annual fundraising bowl-a-thon and a teen leadership program. The class is finalizing the development of a computer lab, an adventure activities program with a calendar of events, a tool kit of KSSP marketing materials including two public service announcement videos, and a teen career shadow day.

Class members continue to contribute volunteer hours toward completing the projects and bringing the new programs to a sustainable level for Lilliput’s KSSP children and families to enjoy for years to come.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS - DECEMBER 18, 2009

All proposals for consideration must be submitted to the Sacramento Metro Chamber no later than end of business day Friday, December 18, 2009. Should your organization be selected, a representative from the class will contact you in early 2010 to begin discussions about the project.

ABOUT LEADERSHIP SACRAMENTO

Leadership Sacramento, founded in 1985, is a program of the Sacramento Metro Chamber, which develops community-minded business and civic leadership. It is a year-long interactive program, limited to 35 participants each year, that provides a behind-the-scenes understanding of the issues that impact the region's economic prosperity, quality of life and culminates in the completion of a community betterment project.

The Leadership Sacramento program is designed to accomplish four distinct goals:

1. EXPOSE PARTICIPANTS to the processes, programs, opportunities and challenges that impact Sacramento 's six-county region.

2. STIMULATE INTEREST in community activities and encourage engagement in local and regional affairs.

3. CREATE A NETWORK of community-minded leaders who will lead in a spirit of collaboration that fosters regional prosperity.

4. PROVIDE PARTICIPANTS with a behind-the-scenes view of regional issues and give them access to the top business, civic and community leaders who play integral roles in the Sacramento region.

Individuals are considered and selected for the Leadership Sacramento program through an open application process. Applications for the Leadership Sacramento program are open to the public each fall, with the participants for each upcoming class selected before the close of each calendar year.
